  • GT Worship & Choir Defined [with examples]

    2009 - 04.20

At GT, we work very hard at encouraging a multi-cultural church full expression.  So, we never say freedom is everyone worshipping at my comfort level.  That’s restrictive and narrow.  Freedom must include tolerance for diversity and rejection of conformity. Warning:  this can sometimes challenges people who are used to a monochromatic, homogeneous style of worship.

What does that mean, specifically?  This is where the challenge of building a truly multi-cultural church is.  If we say we are diverse — that’s easy.  But what most people really mean when they say that is everyone worships one way.  This is not the case at GT.  Our church has almost 40 different cultures active and growing here.

Let me give you some examples of what we mean when we say genuine acceptance of diversity:

    • Passionate, outgoing people sometimes like to shout or jump when they sing — GT applauds this!
    • Passionate, reserved people sometimes like to sit down reverently or silently — GT applauds this!
    • During a sermon sometimes people like to stand up & shout “amen” — go for it!
    • During a message some people like to nod & write down an applicable point — go for it!
    • Some people dress up for church.  It’s important to them — that’s okay!
    • Some people dress up all week for work and won’t come to church if they have to dress up, so  they come in jeans and a t-shirt — that’s okay!

Real worship freedom must be Biblically based, but it also has a cultural personality.  We don’t want a “cookie-cutter” group at GT.  We want people — within the context of order — to freely express the heart for GOD.  We don’t want to suppress people or force them to conform.  We do our best to let freedom reign in worship.

Join us!  Let’s be challenged.  Let’s be changed.  Let’s grow together.  A really diverse church is what we are all going to see when we get to heaven.  Let’s start doing that now and really learn to love and accept people who have the same heart for GOD we do, but express that heart uniquely.

Music is central to everything we do at GT. We are convinced that music is the method.  Music is the highway to our heart.  So every service has passionate worship from every ethnic persuation and style.  We will hear hip hop to gospel to Hillsongs in any given gathering.
